Module 3: Alphabetic Principle/Phonics
This module focuses on the third essential component of teaching reading - the alphabetic principle - more commonly known as phonics. The first professional development presentation in this module, which includes Activity 1, gives an overview of the research on why it is important to directly teach phonics skills starting in the very early grades. Activity 1 begins with reading the Phonics section of Put Reading First, and answering a set a questions related to this reading. This activity will take approximately an hour to complete, so plan accordingly.
The second presentation within this module focuses on strategies for directly teaching phonics within elementary classrooms and includes a routine for introducing new phonics skills within a teacher's daily lesson plan. All materials are available below.
